The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion

On May 15, 1942, the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAACs) was formed, and in July 1942, the word "auxiliary" was dropped from the name, and the Women's Army Corps (WACs) was formed giving women full military benefits like their male counterparts.

The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion made a distinctive and invaluable contribution to the war effort by tackling a staggering three-year backlog of undelivered mail—17 million pieces intended for American soldiers stationed far from home. In a time of widespread discrimination and amidst the turmoil of a divided world at war, these 855 courageous women brought a much-needed lifeline of hope and connection to the front lines.

The unit was active from 1945 to 1946 under the Command of Major Charity Adams, Captains Mary F. Kearney and Bernice G. Henderson. Their nickname was “Six-Triple Eight" and their motto was “No Mail, Low Morale.”
